Success is very relative per person. Some people consider success or a successful person as someone who has attained a level of achievement like winning the championship in sports or losing weight or reaching a financial goal. But my definition of success is being able to achieve a goal and using that achievement to make a difference in the lives of other people.

Life is not just about becoming rich and famous. The end result of success is fame and riches but the hard work is what makes the difference. People wake up and burn the candle on both ends just to put food on the table. Others create businesses that employ other people who are able to feed their families. In my definition that is success. In a nutshell, when you create something or do something that makes a difference in another person’s life then you have attained success.

Sometimes to be able to make a difference in the lives of other people; one has to differ gratification. Differed gratification is forgoing something today in order to get something else or the same thing in the feature. For example you may not want to go on vacation this year because you want to go on a first class vacation next year so you save for this year and next year. On the other hand you could go on an economy budget vacation this year and next year but it will not be the same experience as when you have enough money to spend.

To be seen as successful by others today is basically differed gratification from yesterday. Differed gratification comes with determination and perseverance. Most people that we consider successful today paid for what they are enjoying today from yesterday. The alternative is to borrow from tomorrow and enjoy it today. The later is more risky. Some people call it over extend in business. In individual lives it is called living beyond your means. With that said the decision is solely yours. You can choose to be seen as successful today or wait until you are really successful. For me the only time it makes complete sense to borrow from tomorrow is if your return on investment outweighs the downside.
